What Does Executive Burnout Actually Feel Like? By Sharif Colbert

You snapped at someone you love.
Not because they did anything wrong.
You just had nothing left.
The emails keep coming.
The meetings keep piling up.
People keep needing things from you.
And somewhere along the way, you stopped feeling like yourself.
You tell yourself you're just tired.
But what if you're not tired?
What if you're burned out?

Executive Burnout Doesn't Always Look Like Exhaustion
When most people think of burnout, they picture someone who can't get out of bed.
Someone who is visibly overwhelmed.
Someone falling apart.
But executive burnout is often much quieter than that.
You still show up.
You still lead.
You still perform.
You still get things done.
From the outside, everything looks fine.
Inside?
You're running on fumes.
Signs of Executive Burnout
Executive burnout often shows up as:
irritability
cynicism
decision fatigue
emotional numbness
loss of motivation
difficulty concentrating
feeling disconnected from your work
struggling to be present at home
You may still be productive.
You just don't enjoy any of it anymore.
The Success Trap
One of the reasons executive burnout is so dangerous is because successful people are often rewarded for pushing through it.
You tell yourself:
"I'll rest after this project."
"I'll slow down after this quarter."
"I just need to get through this month."
Then another project arrives.
Another deadline.
Another responsibility.
And the cycle continues.
Many high performers don't realize they're burned out because they've become incredibly skilled at functioning while exhausted.
When Burnout Follows You Home
Executive burnout doesn't stay at work.
It shows up at home too.
You become less patient.
Less present.
Less interested in things you used to enjoy.
The people closest to you often notice it before you do.
Because while you're physically present, mentally and emotionally you're somewhere else.
Burnout Isn't a Weakness
This is important.
Burnout is not proof that you're weak.
It's often proof that you've been strong for too long without enough recovery.
The problem isn't that you're incapable.
The problem is that you've been carrying more than any person was designed to carry indefinitely.
The Question Most People Avoid
Many professionals ask:
"How do I become more productive?"
A better question might be:
"Why am I trying to squeeze more out of an already empty tank?"
Sometimes the answer isn't another productivity system.
Sometimes the answer is honesty.
Pops Prompt
Ask yourself:
When was the last time I felt genuinely excited about my work?
If you can't remember...
don't ignore that answer.
This Is the Work I Do
I work with capable professionals who look successful from the outside but feel exhausted, stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed internally.
